Aylesbury Vale Youth Theatre was founded in 2006 by a group of former Aylesbury school students.
It all began when Tom Molloy asked some friends from Aylesbury Music Centre whether they might like to put on a musical in their home town. With everyone at different universities around the country, it took a lot of frantic emailing and telephoning before the group decided to raise some funds, form a company and put on City of Angels with a cast and crew composed entirely of 16-21 year olds.
The following August, after months of planning but just ten days’ rehearsal, AVYT performed their first ever show, and they have not stopped since. Next up was Stand and Deliver, a “Who’s Line is it Anyway?”-style improvisation show where five fearless actors took to the stage each night to create stories, scenes, songs and a thirty minute play out of nothing but audience suggestions and their own imaginations. Around the same time, company members went on a theatre trip to see Avenue Q in the West End, and that summer saw a move to Pendley Court Theatre in Tring for a full-scale production of Thoroughly Modern Millie.
The future of Aylesbury Vale Youth Theatre lies in the hands of its members – their interests and their ideas. The company ethos is to allow 16-25 year olds to take responsibility for every aspect of productions, from acting, directing and music to production, design, technical and stage management. Anyone within in the age range can join the company, propose a show or a project, and gain the support they need in order to make it happen. Watch this space to see exactly where that takes us.
